Online Text Editor
A plain-text editor with live word and character counts, find and replace, sorting and a save button.
Runs in your browser. The file or text you give it is not uploaded. Free, no account.
How it works
You have text to clean up before it goes anywhere: a list of URLs to sort, a draft to trim, a mess of blank lines. Paste it here. Word and character counts update as you type, and the tools for the whole text, find and replace, sort, dedupe, trim, sit beside it.
- 1
Type or paste. Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time update as you go.
- 2
Tools for the whole text: find and replace (with regular expressions), sort lines, remove duplicate or empty lines, trim spaces.
- 3
Your draft is kept in this browser between visits, and saves to a .txt file when you want it.
What it does not do
Plain text only: no fonts, bold or images.
The draft is stored in this browser. It is not synced and clearing site data removes it.
When a source is busy or a site does not answer, this tool says so. It never fills the gap with a guess.
Questions
Where is my draft saved?
In this browser. The editor keeps your draft between visits so it is there when you come back, on the same browser and device. It does not sync anywhere, so clearing your site data removes it. When you want a copy you can move, use the save button to write a .txt file.
Can I use regular expressions in find and replace?
Yes. Switch find and replace to regular expression mode and you can match patterns rather than plain text, which is useful for stripping trailing spaces, reformatting dates or removing repeated markup. Test on a copy of the text first: a pattern that matches too much will change lines you did not mean to touch. Plain mode is faster for one exact word.
Can I make text bold or add headings?
No. The editor holds plain text only, so there are no fonts, bold, italics or images. That is what makes it useful for text you will paste somewhere else: no formatting comes with it. If you need styling, write in a word processor and keep this for cleaning up the words themselves.
