Video to GIF Converter

Turns a clip from a video into an animated GIF in your browser, with the length, size and frame rate you choose.

Runs in your browser. The file or text you give it is not uploaded. Free, no account.

How it works

You have a clip you want to send as an animated GIF. Open the video here and your browser decodes it, so nothing is uploaded. Set the start and end, the width and the frames per second, and the estimate tells you how many frames that makes before you convert.

  1. 1

Open a video. Your browser decodes it; nothing is uploaded.

  2. 2

Pick the start and end, the width and the frames per second. The estimate shows how many frames that makes.

  3. 3

Each frame is reduced to a palette of up to 256 colours and written into a GIF, with a progress bar.

What it does not do

  • GIF is an old, inefficient format: a few seconds at a modest width is the practical limit. For anything longer, a muted MP4 is far smaller.

  • Your browser must be able to play the video. MP4 and WebM work nearly everywhere; some MOV and MKV files do not.

When a source is busy or a site does not answer, this tool says so. It never fills the gap with a guess.

Questions

How long a clip can I turn into a GIF?

A few seconds. GIF is an old, inefficient format and a longer clip at a usable width becomes a file too big to send. Set a modest width, a low frame rate and the shortest section that still shows what you mean. For anything longer, a muted MP4 is far smaller.

Why does my MOV file not open here?

The browser has to be able to play the video before any frames can be read. MP4 and WebM work nearly everywhere; some MOV and MKV files do not. Convert the clip to MP4 first, then open that file here.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser: the video is decoded locally, frames are reduced to a palette of up to 256 colours and written into a GIF on your machine. Nothing is sent anywhere. The trade-off is that the work uses your computer's memory, so a long clip may stall the tab.
