Grammar Checker

Finds spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes and offers a fix for each, without your text leaving the browser.

Runs in your browser. The file or text you give it is not uploaded. Free, no account.

How it works

You have a draft and you want the errors gone before anyone else reads it. Paste it here and the checker underlines each spelling, grammar and punctuation problem, explains it, and offers a fix you can accept in one click. It runs inside your browser, so the text stays on your machine.

  1. 1

The checker is a rule-based engine that runs inside your browser. The first use downloads it (about 16 MB); after that it works offline.

  2. 2

Each issue is underlined in your text with an explanation and one or more corrections. Accept a fix with one click.

  3. 3

Choose American, British, Australian, Canadian or Indian English.

What it does not do

  • English only.

  • It checks rules, not meaning. It will not notice a sentence that is grammatical but says the wrong thing.

When a source is busy or a site does not answer, this tool says so. It never fills the gap with a guess.

Questions

Does my text get sent to a server?

No. The checker is a rule-based engine that runs inside your browser. The first time you use it, the browser downloads it, about 16 MB, and after that it works offline. Your text stays on your machine, which matters if you are checking a contract, a report or anything else you cannot upload.

Why did it miss a sentence that reads wrong?

The checker tests rules: spelling, grammar and punctuation. It cannot judge meaning, so a sentence that is grammatical but says the opposite of what you intended passes. Read your text once more for sense. It also checks English only, so text in another language comes back with nothing useful.

Which English should I choose, British or American?

Pick the one your reader expects. American, British, Australian, Canadian and Indian English are all available, and the setting changes spellings and some punctuation, so colour and color each pass under the matching variant. If your house style mixes them, set the variant you use most, then fix the rest by hand.
